Survivin’ and Thrivin’ !

IMG_0135

This week marks the 18th anniversary of my diagnosis of Breast Cancer.  I was 38 years old, married (quite unhappily) with a son 7 and a daughter just turned 5.  I had discovered my lump myself  in the shower a couple of months prior, right before a professional conference that took me to the Pacific Northwest.  During that trip, I took some much-needed time to consider what the future may hold.  Would I not see my children grow up, would I leave this earth with regrets about staying in a bad marriage?  How would I live out what remained of my life? 18 years later, I look back on those six months of surgery, chemo, and radiation as a horrific trial I wish on no one.

I have been single now for 13 years.  My children are grown and  on their own. I have come to appreciate life with a deep conviction only those who have stared into the abyss can know.

Diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer have come a long day since 1993.  Some day I know we will have a cure.

In a meantime, I try to bring comfort to those newly diagnosed with cancer, and pray for those going through treatment.

I stitched up this little pillow over the weekend to mark my anniversary!

Happy Stitching,
Pam

Its been a long while I have not updated anything pink here.

I happened to come to this photo by one of my daily read, Bloom, and I knew right away that it would make a great HDT.

The new HDT has been listed in my Etsy shop and I hope to update you with a doily that am currently working on using this HDT. Its working up very nicely.

Kim said to post it!

Well, here is my second C is for Cure. I really like it. I used the colors I had used on LK Chicks Rule. I still have to put the trim on it, but thought you would like to see a pic.
And for those of you who didn't see the previous post, it is a freebie from Just Cross Stitch Magazine.
So like Kim said, hop over there, print it off, stitch it up and show it off!

C is for Cure

If you havent checked it out - the Just Cross Stitch website is offering the freebie from Lizzie Kate, called "C is for Cure". How appropiate with October just around the corner.

So.. wait.. did I see that as a FREEBIE. Yes its a freebie. Free as is... no need to buy the magazine, no need to seek it out at the local bookstore (even though Im sure they would appreciate it), but all it will cost you is a piece of paper and the ink. Cause Im sure you all have the extra fabric and threads to stitch it up.. cause thats why we have a stash. So stitch it up, once, twice, three times or more! And when you do.. post it here!

Go here to download the pdf file - C is for Cure

Come October, we will see how many of us that really care about kicking breast cancer in the butt!

So, go ahead, stitch it up, and post it right here on Stitch Pink. Spread the word, get the news out there... and lets make an awareness of Stitch Pink, and this wonderful freebie from Lizzie Kate.

Psst ... Im working on offering prizes for a contest that I have in mind.. if you would like to donate.. please contact me @ stitchpink@gmail.com

2 finishes

I did the Just Cross Stitch Magazine (Lizzie Kate) freebie. I think it is really cute. I did it on Strawberry Milkshake Silkweaver Lugana (28 count).
And I had several friends in MD stitch this blackwork design for my Stitching for a Cure project. They asked that I do the finishing for them. Here is one of them that breast cancer survivor Janice did:

New pattern

Just Cross Stitch magazine, Sept./Oct. issue has a new Lizzie Kate pattern. It is in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October and is called C is for cure!
Now here is the fun part: They have the pattern for free on their website! Click on Just Cross Stitch and go to free patterns.
It is stitched on Baby Lotion Pink Lugana. I am stitching it on a brighter pink Silkweaver fabric. But either way you stitch it, the pattern is really cute!
I encourage you to pick up a copy of the magazine if you can because they have a lot of cute stuff in there this issue. But if you can't, be sure to hop over to their website and get your free copy of C is for Cure!

Volunteers Needed

A couple weeks ago, I saw that Donna at Stitching for a Cure needed some volunteers to stitch ornaments to be given as gifts to the Relay for Life volunteers. I decided to help out since I've been wanting to do something for a while. Last I knew, Donna still needed a few more ornaments so if you want to help out, I know she'd be grateful. You don't even have to finish it if you don't want to... She will do it, if you do the stitching. Go ahead, go for it! :)

I finished the stitching in a few hours. Now all I have left is some beading and construction of the ornie itself.

The floss looks red but it's really a dark pink

Anyone in the State of Washington?

Mainly in the Everett, WA area.. please contact me, and I will share more info with you.

To whom it may concern:

I am hoping to get some more information about you and stitch pink via phone. I am Chris Kelley and I work for the Everett AquaSox Professional baseball team. We are the Minor League affiliate for the Seattle Mariners and will be holding two events that I feel would be right in line with what you all do to increase awareness about breast cancer and using stitching to do so. The First is our Inaugural Stitch’n Pitch night at the ballpark and the second is our Pink in the park celebration. I would like to discuss this and get information to whomever might be able to get me in to contact with someone in the state of Washington.

Thank you for any help.

-Chris

Too shock to think of anything else

I am not good in my social life. I am a person who is of at the moment type. I don't make good conversations and usually I like to listen to the others. I can't speak impromptu but I'm great online.

Just found out that one of my err, long time friend which I was the one who made her decide to join me in the same company, was confirmed that she has cancer.

I knew her through when one member called for us locals to meet up. She was one of the first few who I became acquainted. She introduced me to books and authors that I would not have found on my own. She was a very jolly person to be with and she has led a full life in her very young (30 plus) life.

In my own capacity, I have decided to make her a simple, quick disappearing 9-patch summer quilt. I am targeting to complete it by end of September.

Time and tide waits for no man and this time, its ring loud and clear.

Knitting Needle Donation

I am not a knitter, but I came across these Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needles at my LNS. Purchase the Breast Cancer needles and Denise donates the profits. Amazingly, over $100,000 has been donated since July 1st. That's incredible! You may not knit, but someone you know may and here's another valuable chance to get involved.
Pass the word.

Hello, Everyone!

This is my first posting as a member. My computer has been in the repair shop for several weeks and I decided to write before it goes back out again.

As a member of the 2009 Christmas Challenge, I have been stitching ornaments using my star designs that I am creating for The Americana Stars Memorial, a 9/11 remembrance wall piece that will be over 200 feet when completed, all hand cross stitched. I used one of my designs for a Stitch Pink star. I hope you like it.

When my computer is finally fixed, I will make the design available in .pdf form for anyone who would like it. Please check my blog for an update and a link to the layout to come.

Kim, thank you for a lovely site. It is one of the BEST!

It is my pleasure to contribute in memory of my cousin, Andrea, and her mother, Gloria, who both passed from breast cancer.

Click for a Cure!

During the month of April the Breast Cancer site (in addition to funding mammograms) will donate $10,000 for research if clicks on the site total 200 mammograms. As of this posting they are at 59% of their goal with only 10 days left! Please go there every day and click. Tell your friends and family! During these times it's hard for any of us to donate money so this is a wonderful way to help out. It costs you nothing but a few seconds of your time! You can click 1 time per day. I also have a link on my blog. Please continue to click even after April to help fund mammograms.
While you are there, please also click on the other tabs at the top and then on the button to help literacy, the hungry, animals shelters, etc.

Hugs, Elaine

"Barb's" Needle Nanny

I'm sure this needle minder has been posted numerous times in the past, but I'm assuming it can never get too old to see more than once. I purchased the Needle Nanny by Twisted Oaks Designs a couple years ago. I bought it so I could contribute to breast cancer research AND because my mother-in-law, Barbara, died from breast cancer on June 1, 2006; 11 months after I married her son and after 6 years of friendship. I stitched this shortly after she passed, but put it aside for various reasons...life, kids, work, the normal stuff that gets in our way. Just the other day I sat down and assembled it. Not because I "need" a needle minder, but because I owe it to Barb. Besides, it was because of her and millions of others that I added it to my stash. I enjoyed putting this together and I thought of my friend while doing so. Thanks for letting me share this tribute!

A new ornament

Here is another ornament for my stitching for a cure project. It is the freebie Breast Cancer Awareness 2007 (the middle of the pattern). I stitched it on an overdyed fabric called Pink Raspberry with Hyacinth GAST. In the very center I put a sterling silver charm. I finished the back with pink ribbon fabric and some rhinestone trim. Hope you like!

Pink Tatted Heart

I designed and tatted this heart last March before I found out I had breast cancer in May. I don't know why it hasn't occurred to me before now to post it for you. I have been so blessed. I had a lumpectomy and they are checking me every 3 months. If only every woman in the world had access to early detection and WOULD MAKE AND KEEP THEIR APPOINTMENTS!

Okay no more preaching. I just wanted to share this heart with you. If any of you tat, you can find the pattern here. If you do tat it, I'd love to see pictures.

Peace, Love And A Cure
by Lizzie Kate

I've had this one for awhile all kitted and in my stitching bag. During our EGA meeting last week I was looking for something small to start and decided to go with this. Once I started it I just couldn't put it down.

breast cancer scissor pocket

This is a Dinky Dyes/Cats Whiskers collaboration. I used a pastel pink 28 cnt even weave from Jaynes Attic and the floss is Easter Bunny from Polstitches. Not strictly 'pink' but I wanted the words to stand out a bit more than they would have. The scissors are a bit on the heavy side, so I probably won't be using them for stitching, but they are a lovely design.

Good luck everyone. Enjoy. If you don't have a blog please leave an email so I can get in touch with you to get an address to mail your prize to you.
